Press Release
HURRICANE IKE UPDATE #2

Here is the latest update from Hazard Management Cayman Islands’ Joint Communications Service. The next statement from the National Hazard Management Council will be issued this afternoon following the 4:00pm (local time) update from the National Hurricane Center in Miami unless there are significant developments in the interim.

 Key messages

  1. With Hurricane Ike holding its path, as a precautionary measure, the Sister Islands have been placed under a Tropical Storm Warning. However, the projected distance of the closest point of approach (CPA) for Hurricane Ike continues to be over 100 miles north of the Sister Islands.
  2. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Grand Cayman.
  3. Windy and overcast weather conditions experienced on the Brac earlier today were due to the presence of a spiral band from Ike.
  4. At 10:00am today, the centre of Hurricane Ike was located near 21.1 N, 78.5 W or 127 miles northeast of the Sister Islands. The system is moving west near 14mph, with maximum sustained winds near 100mph.
  5. The current projection is for the Sister Islands and for Grand Cayman to experience winds of 25-30mph this afternoon.
  6. The Cayman Islands National Weather Service and Hazard Management Cayman Islands will continue to monitor the system today.
  7. Residents, especially those on the Sister Islands, should continue to monitor local weather announcements.
